The TVA-1000 is a portable Flame Ionization Detector (FID) featuring an optional photoionization (PID) detector. It features multiple response factors and curves, multi point calibration, on board datalogging and an 8 hour battery life. These features combined in a portable and lightweight package have made the TVA-1000 our most popular FID.

Introduction to FIDs

A Flame Ionization Detector (FID) measures real time concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in low levels from parts per billion (ppb) up to 50,000 parts per million (ppm).
Unlike a Photoionization Detector (PID), which uses a high energy ultra violet light to ionize molecules, anFID ionizes samples by burning them with a hydrogen flame. This method can ionize any organic compound with an ionization potential (IP) of 15.4 or lower. Ions formed in the sample stream are driven in one direction by a bias electrode and accumulated at a collector electrode. The ion current is then amplified and converted to a meter readout in parts per million (ppm).


FIDs are used for detecting hydrocarbons and other easily flammable compounds. They are very sensitive to these compounds, and response tends to be linear across a wide range of concentrations. Unlike aPID, an FID destroys most, if not all, of the components it is detecting in the hydrogen flame of the detection chamber.
FIDs are insensitive to H20, CO2, CS2, SO2, CO, NOX, and noble gases because they are not able to be oxidized/ionized by the flame.
